10 ways to De-stress in Austin During a Busy Work-Day

10 ways to De-stress in Austin During a Busy Work-Day

Stress is cumulative. If you don’t deal and handle your stresses from the moment you wake til the time you go to sleep, you are setting yourself for the same thing the next day. Your body and mind need relief from the negative effects of stress. Since most of you work I thought I would give you a few tips to controlling your stress levels during the day.

Austin, TX is a great place to practice any of these ideas or make one that fits your lifestyle better.

Here are 10 ways to lowering your stress while at work (or at home):

1)      Get up and MOVE! It doesn’t matter where you work, what you do, or who you are with, moving around doing the opposite of what you have been doing for 2 hours, which is usually sitting and hunching over is a MUST. Life is movement, everything moves and so should you. If you are feeling a lack of motivation or inspiration, get your creative juices flowing with a little movement.

2)      Write out 9 positive things for every negative thought that has been lingering all day. Thought become things and if you are at work this usually means your work and mind are going to suffer. Why? Well you completely wipe out your negative thought by countering your one with 9 positive ones.

3)      Listen to your favorite song and let go! Music and rhythm are a perfect way to get you out of a funk. Blasting your favorite song in the middle of the day may sound ridiculous, but 4 minutes of magical music is worth getting you pumped up to finish your day.

4)      Make someone smile by doing something kind. There is energy in every aspect of life and this energy follows your intention. If you do something kind for someone not only are you stimulating positive energy, but you are also releasing happy hormones in yourself, the other person, AND anyone else who happened to have witnessed your nice gesture.

5)      Take a stroll around nature for an invigorating break. What happens on most breaks? Coffee, gossiping, negative self-talk, etc…are the usual breaks we give ourselves. Stop the vicious cycle of breaks that are doing more bad than good and get outside and take a brisk walk to clear your mind and invigorate your day.

6)      During your time outside, work on taking some deep diaphragmatic breaths. In 5 or 10 minutes you could stimulate your immune system, detoxify your system, ignite your metabolism, and burn extra calories. Studies show that diaphragmatic breathing does all these things and more. Breathe in through your nose for a 5 second count and take a forceful breath out with pursed lips for a 3 second count.

7)      During your lunch or snack break, focus on what you are eating and avoid multitasking. When most of us eat, we are either rushing to get through or trying to complete other tasks. If we are stressing out while we eat our digestive systems are shutting down. Relax and concentrate on your nutritious food as you eat to allow for proper absorption and digestion.

8)      Read 30 minutes of personal development. Take your favorite inspirational book with you to work and read a few pages during the day to reignite your passion or purpose for you being at work.

9)      Eat a healthy snack or lunch and drink water throughout the day instead of stimulants or crap foods. Lay off the carbs and lay off the sodas, YES even diet. If you care at all about your body, mind, and future health you will start making better dietary choices throughout your day. Eat a salad, nuts, lean meats, fruits. You know what’s healthy and what is not, make the right choice!

10)   Accept responsibility for yourself and your actions. This one is probably the toughest and the most powerful. Taking blame for your decisions is liberating and mental strengthening. We tend to pass the blame on a person or circumstance; this only weakens us and takes us further away from achieving our goals. Don’t blame, accept the responsibility and drive forward.

There are many other ways to control your stress levels than the 10 I mention above. Find what works best for you and do it. Reading this or knowing what helps you deal with the day only works if you actually take action. Dealing with stress is important, as stress is associated with over 200 diseases, many that can be prevented with a little commitment and action.
